The power of shared goals
We all know goal setting is a powerful tool.
You need to know your destination before taking steps to get there.
But there’s more powerful magic when goals are shared.
At the beginning of the quarter my girlfriend and I wrote out our goals for the next three months. Some of mine were big (run a marathon), some were small (cook one new mediterranean recipe). I find simply knowing someone else knows and supports my goals is a big motivator and morale boost.
But there are more powerful benefits to shared goals.
In any organization it’s easy for competing and disperate visions for future to emerge. The larger the organization the more naturally this will happen. What we need are shared goals. We need a mission that everyone is working towards. When there’s consensus on the most important problems and how to solve them we can all pull in the same direction. The “who must do what by when'“ questions are answered easier with a clear target and a focused team. Shared goals lead to collaboration and collaboration leads to organizational success.
Leaders set goals.
You’re a leader whether you have the title or not.
Find problems solve (in your home, at work, wherever). Find your allies. Set your goals and start moving.
That’s all for now.
I have more emails to write.
